Mining in
Mookgopong Municipality includes the extracting and beneficiating of minerals
occurring naturally, including solids, liquids and crude petroleum and
gases. It also includes underground and surface mines, quarries and the
operation of oil and gas wells as well as all supplemental activities
for dressing and beneficiating of ores and other crude materials.
The mining sector represents a significant component of the regional economy
as it contributed 20.9% (2002) to the provincial GVA. Contrary to this,
the local mining sector became dormant with the recent closure of the
Buffalo fluorspar mine.
